
If you’re working as a caregiver for a family member or friend before they need to move into an assisted living facility to get additional care there, you know just how hard and draining it can be to be the one responsible for the care of another adult. But even with all of the stress and pressure of this role, it’s vital that you find ways that you can get relief so that you don’t break under the responsibility and mental and emotional labor.
To help ensure that this doesn’t happen to you, here are three tips for getting relief as a caregiver.
Know When Relief Is Necessary For You
Sometimes, it can be hard to recognize when you’re feeling particularly overwhelmed and stressed until you’ve passed on the threshold of lashing out at those around you or harming yourself in one way or another. So to keep this from happening, it’s important to learn when you’re getting too stressed and how to take steps to overcome this.
For many people, there are certain signs that can show that you’re starting to get in over your head. These can include things like feeling anxious and stressed, losing your patience easily, feeling sad or hopeless, experiencing physical pain, misusing alcohol or drugs, neglecting your own health and the like. So if you start to experience any of these things, make sure you find a way to get relief as soon as possible.
Work To Create A Support System
When you’re the one who’s supposed to be caring for another person, you can’t just take a break and rely on anyone else to fill your role. What you need to do is find others who can do what you do while you take a break.
To do this, try to reach out to your personal network to see who is willing to help. You could also consider hiring someone to take care of your loved one during the hours that you’re going to be away, be it a babysitter or a home health worker who can handle the needs of your loved one.
Don’t Neglect Your Own Health And Well-Being
To be able to give care to your loved one, you have to have taken care of yourself first. So while it can be hard to take time for yourself when you have so much on your plate, neglecting your health and well-being can be detrimental to both your health and the health of who you’re caring for. But when you eat healthy, get exercise, practice good hygiene, work through your own feelings, and have time to yourself, you can be the best caregiver you can possibly be.
